5 great local restaurants to try in Ypsilanti

Whether you are new to the Ypsilanti area or have been here for years, food is a huge part of most people’s lives, and I personally am always on the lookout for amazing new dishes to try in the region. While some people can be quite picky, I am an adventurous eater and love trying food from different cultures, something I received from my mother who introduced me to food from around the world since I was young.

Now I like to introduce people I know to good places to eat, to share my love of food even more.

Here are some restaurants that anyone new to Ypsilanti should check out:

Cuppy’s best soul food

To be honest, I haven’t tried this southern cuisine joint yet, but I plan to as soon as I get the chance. Previously located in a gas station on Ecorse, Ypsilanti Restaurant just opened a full-size location on Washtenaw this month.

Cuppy’s has great reviews from community members and has great options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

enjoy your food

“Kenisha Diallo, born and raised in Ypsilanti, is co-owner of Bon Appetit with her husband Ismael Diallo, who takes care of the kitchen with his mother and his friend. The newly married couple were planning to start their own business when the pandemic first hit, and while seeing the food market go downhill, the couple came up with the idea of bringing good African food to the Ypsi region. The menu was designed based on the home cooking of Ismael’s mother, whose family is originally from Guinea.

After seeing an article on the Echo page last year that Carmen Cheng wrote about this new West African restaurant, I was excited to try it for myself. Located on Cross Street, the family restaurant is very close to campus.

My mum and I visited the place in August last year and ended up trying two starters called Fataya and Nem as well as a meal called Dibi which included grilled lamb, jollof rice and plantains. Everything tasted amazing and was at a great price too. I heard a lot of other people rave about this place, and I recommend everyone to try it for themselves soon.

Miny’s Mexican Restaurant

After eating tacos in March of this year and trying a slew of Mexican restaurants and food trucks in Ypsilanti, I came to the conclusion that Miny’s was my favorite. Not only is their meat the best, but their hot sauces are also phenomenal and everything is very affordable.

Located in a strip of Washtenaw, I often call this place to order a few tacos before sitting outside the student center on campus on a nice day.

This Moroccan family restaurant is super underrated, definitely worth a try if you’re looking for amazing Mediterranean cuisine. From dips to full meals to sweets, everything I’ve eaten here is full of flavor and I’m definitely planning to visit again soon. Whether you want a quiet date or a family dinner, visiting this beautiful place will be an experience you won’t regret.

got burger

This late night spot is my first choice with friends and I when leaving an Ann Arbor club at 2am.

This simple-yet-delicious burger joint offers delivery and stays open until 1 a.m. Monday through Wednesday, 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, and midnight Sunday. Got Burger is perfect for late night cravings, with burgers, fries, smoothies and more. Next time you’re up super late to study and all the dining halls are closed, call this place on Cross Street for a quick and tasty snack or meal.

If you’re more in the pizza mood, my favorite late-night delivery spot is Mr. Pizza.
