Kekis Cafe fills the Mexican breakfast niche in Fremont

FREMONT — For a long time, Dora Ortiz saw the need to fill a niche in Fremont for people who love Mexican food as a breakfast option.

His vision became a reality earlier this month as Ortiz opened Kekis Cafe on West State Street.

Kekis moved into the building at 601 W. State St. previously occupied by AM KornerCafe.

Dora Ortiz, owner of Kekis Cafe in Fremont, said the new restaurant offers popular Mexican breakfast dishes, as well as classic breakfast and lunch dishes. The restaurant is located at 601 W. State St. in the former AM Corner location.

“We’re already seeing people coming back, that’s always a good sign,” Ortiz said Wednesday, as she went back and forth between cooking at Kekis and visiting customers.

Kekis opened on June 7, with hours from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., seven days a week.

Ortiz said his parents owned Casa Fiesta on Hayes Avenue.

She said her father was a customer at AM Korner and told him the restaurant’s longtime owner was looking to sell the West State Street site.

It took Ortiz more than six months to renovate Kekis before it opened.

The Ortiz’s Mexican breakfast menu includes huveos rancheros, cazuela de huevos, chilaquiles, huevos con chorizo, huevos la mexicana, and breakfast burritos.

She said chilaquiles — corn tortilla chips served with red, green, or a mixture of the two sauces — and huevos con chorizos were two items she said would be favorites with Kekis customers.

Ortiz said Kekis also offers classic breakfast items such as cookies and gravy, home fries, bacon and eggs, pancakes, omelets and a vegan plate.

Kekis’ lunch menu includes mega beef, chicken, and steak burritos, quesadillas, street tacos, and veggie burritos, as well as desserts (arroz con leche and chocolate cake) and a kids’ menu.

Dora Ortiz, owner of Kekis Cafe in Fremont, cooks a breakfast burrito with chorizo at the restaurant's 601 W. State St. Kekis opened June 7 and is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Ortiz said the entire menu is available to customers any time of the day.

Kekis’ menu is available online on the restaurant’s Facebook page at

Ortiz said she will eventually start adding off-menu items and menu specials from time to time.

She said she was already seeing familiar faces from Casa Fiesta.

“My brother is really good at advertising and sending people out for breakfast,” Ortiz said.

With its location on State Street, Ortiz hopes to attract patrons from downtown Fremont events and the Sandusky County Courthouse, both of which are near Kekis.
