There are plenty of great dining options along Bayshore Drive in Naples. And even though this region was hit hard by Hurricane Ian, many places are open for business, including this week’s foodie destination, Taqueria San Julian.
This unassuming little restaurant offers some of the best tacos in Southwest Florida. And if you thought the food trucks at Celebration Park had hurt their business, you’d be wrong.
It was packed that Friday night.
Things started appetizingly with guacamole and fries. The fries were thin and tasted homemade and the guac was fresh and fantastic.
After: ‘Watts for Dinner:’ Goodland, Crabby Lady remains a great place to dine
For my entree, I chose tinga tacos and steak quesadillas. Lots of chicken on the tacos, with optional cilantro and onions and your choice of several salsas – green, smoked, red (green salsa is best).
The chicken has subtle hints of tomato marinade, and each taco includes two fresh corn tortillas that keep them from falling apart.
If you’ve never eaten quesadilla here, it’s not served the same way as many restaurants, like sliced pizza. No, each quesadilla is the size of a taco; looks a lot like a taco; except for the melted cheese inside. The steak was tender, juicy and cooked to perfection.
My dinner partner chose tacos al pastor and chorizo tacos. Al pastor is one of my favorites; the Mexican version of shawarma spit-grilled meat. Chorizo is just a sausage with a distinct red coloring that might make you think it’s very spicy. It’s not. This color comes from dried and smoked red peppers. Yum!
It is a narrow dining room. But everyone is super nice. The restaurant also does a good take-out deal.
If you want good tacos, Taqueria San Julian is a great choice Good meal!
After: ‘Watts for Dinner:’ Meatball Sliders! Huge entries! Joey does not disappoint
